William R. Popwell

William R. Popwell, 86, of Clanton, passed away on May 9 at Bill Nichols Veteran Home in Alexander City.

He was born on June 20, 1926, in Clanton, to the late John Popwell and Rinie Collins Popwell .

Popwell served 30 years in the U.S. Army then returned to Clanton. He worked for the Board of Registars and also was a commander of the VFW for 12 years.

He is survived by his wife, Charlene Palmateer Popwell; three sons William Lynn (Song), Michael and David Andrew (Sallie); one daughter Denice Popwell Cleckler (Carl David); two grandchildren Jessica Lynn Popwell and Spencer Bailey Cleckler.

Popwell was preceded in death by one son Christopher Popwell; three brothers Grady, Curtis and Oran; two sisters Mary Robinson and Ida Mae Cutright.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Alabama Funeral Homes and Cremation Centers are handling the arrangements.
