Evening classes to fit schedules of students, working adults

Published 2:41pm Friday, January 4, 2013

Students and adults who work during the day don’t have to rule out the option of furthering their education.

LeCroy Career Technical Center periodically offers workforce training night classes suitable for students 16 and older as well as adults with jobs that preclude them from attending daytime classes.

LeCroy will begin its evening classes in welding, electronics and heating and air conditioning this month with registration Thursday, Jan. 10, at 6 p.m.

The classes are small and centered around those who have late work schedules or who have been out of school for a long period of time.

“We offer programs that will allow them to gain certification in many areas,” LeCroy Director Tommy Glasscock said. “Through partnerships with Jeff State Community College, students can take courses that will enhance their college career should they choose to go on to the next level.”

Glasscock said less than 20 percent of the workforce in Chilton County holds a bachelor’s degree or higher, suggesting that 80 percent of workers would need to obtain the skills necessary for their jobs from programs like those at LeCroy or somewhere else.

At LeCroy, electronics classes include theory of AC (alternating current) and DC (direct current), and students will be required to complete a project. Classes will be Tuesdays from 6–10 p.m. with instructor Chris Johnson.

HVACR classes include the basics of heating, air and ventilation, as well as how to troubleshoot a unit. An EPA card will be issued upon successful completion of the program. Classes will be Mondays and Thursdays from 6–9 p.m. with instructor Hoyt Chastain.

Auto collision repair classes include basic auto repair and finishing techniques.

Classes are offered for 10 weeks and will meet one or two nights per week.

The cost for one 10-week session is $100 for students enrolled in a Chilton County school and $125 for all other enrollees.

Equipment needs for any class will be addressed at orientation Jan. 10.

Enrollees must be at least 16 years old.

LeCroy Career Technical Center is located at 2829 Fourth Ave. N. in Clanton.
