Clanton Police provided more details about a wreck that temporarily shut down Interstate 65 Monday.

Patsy Thompson and Jimmy Thompson Jr., both of Bessemer, were traveling southbound on I-65 when the RV camper hitched to the back of their vehicle started swaying and eventually rolled over directly under the bridge at Exit 208, Chilton County Sheriff Kevin Davis said.

Both southbound lanes were closed for about 30 minutes after the accident until one was re-opened.

The Clanton Police Department, Clanton Fire and Rescue, RPS Ambulance Service and the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

The driver of the vehicle is not known at this time, Clanton Deputy Chief of Police Keith Maddox said.

“Apparently, they were driving and they went off into the median a little ways and overcorrected and lost control,” Maddox said. “We had about 30 minutes of blockage on the interstate.”

Patsy Thompson was transported from Exit 208 to Exit 212 by RPS Ambulance and then by Life Saver Air Ambulance to a Birmingham hospital, but she did not have any life-threatening injuries, according to Davis and Maddox.

The male passenger was not injured or transported to a hospital.
