Lora Joyce “Jo” Varden Payton

Lora Joyce “Jo” Varden Payton, 86, of Clanton died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster.

She was born on Tuesday, June 1, 1926, in Birmingham, daughter of the late Evan Varden and the late Luelza Logan Varden.

She was a secretary.

Surviving are her three daughters, Peggy (Melvin) Cox of Clanton, Jo Ann Headley of Clanton, Jenny Sumrall (Mickey Bragg) of New Brockton; son, Jimmy Payton (Bennie Vincent) of Clanton; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a host of other loving family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Payton.

Friends will be received from 1–2 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Martin Funeral Home Chapel.

Services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 30, at 2 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Griffin and the Rev. Jerry Cleckler officiating.

Interment will follow in Chilton Memorial Gardens in Clanton.
