Minooka Park will host a fishing tournament and poker run on Nov. 3 with other activities including a cornhole tournament and viewing of the Alabama vs. LSU football game.

Park manager Gerald Arrington said the purpose of the event is to get people to enjoy a day at the park.

“We just want people to come out and have a good time,” Arrington said.

The park, located in Jemison, will open early for an all-ages fishing tournament from 8 a.m. to noon with a cash prize for the largest fish caught.

“Everyone that wants to enter the fishing tournament pays $5 so the larger the number of people entering the tournament, the more prize money there will be,” Arrington said.

“The fishing tournament is always really popular and a lot of people have fun doing it.”

At noon, there will be a poker run for off-road vehicles. A cash prize will be awarded to the winner. Arrington said those that participate don’t have to know how to play poker but do need to know how to have an enjoyable time playing the game.

A beanbag toss and cornhole game will take place at the Minooka Park office at 3 p.m. with two-person teams. The charge to participate in the game is $15 per team, and the winners will take home a regulation set of cornhole boards.

The day will conclude with a campfire near the park office and the viewing of the Alabama vs. LSU football game.

Arrington said anyone interested in watching the game should plan to pack their own chairs.

“We had an event like this in the spring and it was a lot of fun so we decided to also have one in the fall,” Arrington said. “Even if you don’t necessarily want to participate in all of the activities, you should at least come out and enjoy the park.”

Arrington said he came up with the idea for a day of activities in the park several years ago when he wanted the activities to appeal to as many people as possible.

“Having fun at the park is our goal and we hope to have good weather so that everyone can have an enjoyable day.”

Arrington said there are a few spots available in the RV section of the park for those interested in bringing their RVs.
