Group to serve as way for mothers to stay active

Published 8:34pm Monday, August 20, 2012

Exercise and spending time with friends are things that don’t come easy for mothers of young children.

A group of local moms plans to help each other stay active.

Mommies in Chilton County will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday for a walk around Goosepond Park in Clanton. Any local mother that would like to join the group is welcome, group organizer Sheryl Gibson said.

“The more the merrier,” said Gibson, who will be joined at the event by her 16-month-old son, Dominic. “It keeps us active. It’s exercise for the mothers, and we get to talk.”

Gibson created a Facebook group after moving to Chilton County from Orlando, Fla. The group has about 50 members in about a month of existence.

“I’m from Florida, so I don’t really know anybody around here,” Gibson said. “It’s hard when you go to the park and you don’t really know anybody.”

Exercise and socializing is the focus for now, but Gibson said she would also like for future events to be educational, such as having a local emergency responder teach the moms about CPR and other emergency techniques that could be useful.

Anyone interested in helping Mommies in Chilton County should search for the group’s Facebook page.
