Hilyer to seek second term as Thorsby mayor

Published 3:29pm Tuesday, June 19, 2012

Thorsby mayor Dearl Hilyer will seek another term as the town’s top leader. He announced his decision to run again to The Clanton Advertiser on Tuesday.

Hilyer said he decided to seek a second term after prayer and deliberation in recent weeks, and he feels “there’s more to do.”

If re-elected, Hilyer said he would continue working to bring new business to Thorsby.

During Hilyer’s first term, Dollar General opened a store in town. Dr. Christa Hayes is also planning to open the new Thorsby Drugs next week, which will be the first pharmacy in Thorsby in 10 years.

The mayor said he is also proud of technological upgrades in the town police department and grants that have been awarded to Thorsby in the past few years.

Hilyer said during his time in office Thorsby has received more than $450,000 in grant money, a majority of that came from funding to replace a bridge on West Medical Center Drive.

Hilyer said he also wants to see ongoing upgrades to the water department through as well as grant applications to build two storm shelters.

“That would mean a lot to me to see (the storm shelters) come to fruition … and so far that looks good,” Hilyer said.

If elected to a second term, he said a new focus would be on cleaning up the town and addressing vacant or rundown lots.

He does not need to run again. He has moved to much in the right direction. I have others friends in office as well, it is making them look bad. I am concerned that if he continues to accomplish things instead of just doing the same old things over, people will begin to expect more from our local officials. Keep the expectations low, I might want to serve one day. Seriously, He has done a great job for his city. Good Luck!
