Playoff games start Friday

Published 3:37pm Tuesday, April 17, 2012

Though it’s not quite the banner year that 2011 was when all county teams made the playoffs, five local teams will still have a “second season” in 2012.

Playoff games start Friday with doubleheaders and continue to a third game Saturday if needed.

Three local teams won their respective areas and the right to host first-round games.

Winners of its first area crown since 2002, Chilton County High School will welcome Greenvillle to town. The battle of the Tigers will be played Friday at 5 and 7 p.m. and noon Saturday if needed.

Thorsby, also area champs, will host Horseshoe Bend in games at 1 and 3:30 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday if needed.

Maplesville also won its Class 1A area but will enjoy a rare bye. The Red Devils would have played the runner-up in Area 5 but because Tallapoosa County’s Edward Bell closed down last year and Notasulga didn’t field any spring sports, the only team remaining in the area (Loachapoka) won first-place by default.

The other two local teams will hit the road in the first round.

Verbena goes down to Loachapoka for games at 4 and 6:15 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday if needed.

Billingsley heads in the same direction to face Reeltown on Friday at 1 and 3 p.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday if needed.
