Marbury man led police on chase that began with robbery at local storeBy Stephen Dawkins Published 3:15pm Wednesday, February 22, 2012
The man arrested to conclude a police chase Tuesday was Ronald Williams Mims, 29, a resident of Bridgewater Court in Marbury, according to Autauga County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Joe Sedinger.
Mims tried to make a purchase at Wadsworth Grocery, off County Road 143, but his credit card was declined, according to the police report. Mims went outside and came back in, apparently to give cash to the clerk, but when the cash register was opened Mims grabbed money and fled.
About $750 was taken from the register, according to the report.
“We call it ‘snatch and grab,’” Sedinger said. “He just grabbed what he could and ran.”
The clerk identified Mims and his vehicle, and Autauga County officers were able to locate him. He then fled to Highway 31 and into Chilton County, where Chilton County officers picked up the chase.
Mims abandoned his vehicle not far across the county line and fled on foot. He was apprehended a short time later, after the Chilton County Sheriff’s Offices tracking dogs, a state helicopter and several agencies responded to help.
Mims is being held in Autauga County Jail on charges of robbery third degree, theft of property second degree and attempting to elude police. His bond has been set at $50,000.
There was a report Tuesday of shots being fired after Mims fled on foot, but Chilton County Sheriff Kevin Davis said the report couldn’t be verified and that a weapon was not found in a search of the wooded area Mims ran through. Sedinger also said he was unaware of Mims wielding a weapon at any point during the incident.
