Clanton’s next mayor and city council will have the same salary as those currently in office.

On Monday, the council voted to keep the salaries the same for those elected in this summer’s municipal elections. Clanton’s mayor will continue to earn $40,000, while council members will be paid $12,000, according to City Clerk Debbie Orange.

In other business, the council took the following actions:

•Rezoned a piece of property on the corner of First Avenue and Second Street from Business-2 to Residential-2.

•Agreed to enter into a contract with Alabama Power to install lights at Interstate 65 Exit 212. Mayor Billy Joe Driver said the city would be responsible for the power bill and maintenance.

•Declared six guns in the Clanton Police Department as surplus. By declaring the guns surplus, they can be sold back to the dealer for a store credit. Police Chief Brian Stilwell said the guns, which were purchased in 2001, need repairs that would be more costly than what they are worth.
