Several public hearings will take place next month across the state to get input on the state’s redistricting process.

The Legislature’s Committee on Reapportionment will hold the hearings on issues concerning the Congressional and state school board district lines.

One public hearing will be held in Clanton – on Thursday, Oct. 6 from noon until 1:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn on Bradberry Lane.

Other meetings are in Ft. Payne, Guntersville, Huntsville, Fayette, Florence, Decatur, Pelham, Birmingham, Troy, Dothan, Greenville, Brewton, Mobile, Thomasville, Demopolis, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, Auburn, Selma and Montgomery.

Every 10 years after a census, state legislatures are required to redraw both federal and state district lines to account for population changes.

Members of the reapportionment committee say the date, time and location of hearings are being publicized so citizens can attend and voice their views and concerns.

Although written statements are not required, the committee encourages the submission of written statements and a brief oral summary of these statements at the hearings.

Any interested party unable to attend a hearing may submit written statements directly to the Committee by writing: Permanent Legislative Committee of Reapportionment, Alabama State House, 11 South Union Street, Room 811, Montgomery, AL 36130-4600.

Any person wanting more information should write the committee at the address above or call its office at (334) 242-7941.

Chilton County’s State Senator Cam Ward serves on the 22-member committee. He can be reached by email at camjulward@aol.com.
