1 killed, 3 injured in I-65 crash
By Staff Reports Published 2:08pm Monday, August 29, 2011An Alabaster man was killed and three others injured Saturday in a three-vehicle crash near Verbena.
The crash occurred at approximately 12:45 p.m. on Interstate 65 at the 199-mile marker, near the Verbena exit, Alabama State Troopers reported.
Santiago Garcia, 48, was killed when the northbound 1998 Ford Explorer he was driving experienced a blowout, overturned several times, crossed the median and collided with two southbound vehicles. Garcia’s wife and sole passenger suffered life-threatening injuries.
The other vehicles involved were a 2009 Dodge Journey and a 2007 Ford U-Haul truck. There were no injuries in the Dodge. Both occupants in the U-Haul, however, suffered serious injuries.
The three individuals with injuries were transported to UAB, one by ambulance and two by helicopter.
No additional information is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this crash.
This is a very dangerous area of I-65. I have worked many wrecks in this area. Helped work the one Thursday. I agree a barrier would maybe help in this area, at least with some of the crossing of the median.

Doesn’t that make like seven (7) people that have died in that area within that last few months? Maybe it’s time to build a barrier there??
